The Craft Cocoa Method

How We Suggest You Make Your Cocoa

Joy Craft Cocoa is designed to be made with intention.

Our blends are layered, rich, and crafted to unfold when treated with care. This method isn’t complicated, but it is deliberate. Following it allows the cocoa to bloom fully, creating a smoother, deeper cup of hot chocolate.

The Standard Method

This is how we recommend preparing Joy Craft Cocoa for the most balanced flavor.

You’ll need:

  • 3 tablespoons Joy Craft Cocoa

  • 6 ounces hot water

Method:

  1. Add cocoa to your mug.

  2. Pour hot water over the cocoa.

  3. Whisk until fully dissolved and smooth.

This step allows the cocoa to bloom, releasing aroma and activating the layered cocoa blend before anything else is added.

Milk Options: Make It Your Way

Joy Craft Cocoa is intentionally dairy-free so you can choose how rich or light your cup becomes.

All Milk of Choice

Prefer a milk chocolate-style experience?

Use 6 ounces of your milk of choice instead of water. Oat, almond, soy, coconut, or dairy milk all work beautifully. This creates a creamier, softer cup similar to traditional milk chocolate.

Do you have milk chocolate?
We don’t offer a separate milk chocolate. Our cocoa becomes milk chocolate when prepared with milk.

Water + Milk Combination

For a balanced cup with both depth and creaminess:

  • 4 ounces hot water

  • 2 ounces milk of choice

This method preserves the cocoa’s complexity while adding a gentle richness.

For Our Intention Collection & Spiced Blends

Some blends benefit from an extra step.

Strain for Smoothness

For the Intention Collection, Mint Hot Chocolate, and Chai Hot Chocolate, we recommend straining after whisking.

Why?
These blends contain spices or botanicals that are meant to infuse, not fully dissolve. Straining results in a smoother, more refined cup while keeping the flavor intact.

How to strain:

  1. Prepare cocoa using the standard method.

  2. Pour through a fine mesh strainer into a clean mug.

  3. Enjoy a silky, spice-kissed cocoa.

Why This Method Matters

Hot chocolate is often treated as an afterthought. We treat it like a craft.

Blooming the cocoa first. Choosing your milk intentionally. Taking an extra moment to whisk or strain. These small actions transform cocoa into an experience worth savoring.

Make It a Moment

This method isn’t about rules. It’s about respect for the ingredient and the moment.

Once you learn it, make it your own.
